Once you have set up your terrarium with the best terrarium plants, look for little figures or rocks to bring even more life to the living decor.
How to Accessorize Your Terrarium
You can create a specific kind of world by adding in figurines, either bought ready-made or ones you’ve created by using polymer clay. A lot of the houses, furniture, dishes, food, etc. can be found anyplace that sells dollhouse furniture, and there are many examples for every style and budget.
Maybe you would want to create a miniature farm, with little plowed fields, tiny vegetables, a farmer, chickens, and kids. You can create any space you can imagine, but here are a few ideas to get you excited:
Decorative Rocks for Your Aquarium
If you don’t want to go the whole hog, you can still accessorize your terrarium with other things. You might want to spread some multicolored gravel from an aquarium supply store. Various rocks and pebbles of different sizes and/or unusual designs work very well in terrariums.
Craft stores have plenty to choose from, plus you might want to go on a rock-picking adventure to find some of your own. Beach stones often have striations and even holes in them. Some can even be heart-shaped! Try to use different textures and colors to add interest.
On the subject of rocks, you can add a real touch of class by incorporating gemstones into the mix. Many sites sell gemstone chips, specifically for aquariums and terrariums. Here are a few, sorted by color, you could experiment with:
-
BLUE ROCKS
Aquamarine, lapis lazuli turquoise, apatite, topaz, and lace agate all have lovely shades of blue.
-
RED ROCKS
Red coral, rhodonite, garnet, carnelian, and jasper well go well against the blue.
-
YELLOW ROCKS
Citrine, yellow agate, and yellow jade add that color.
-
WHITE ROCKS
Finally, opals and quartz while white, also lend a certain luster.
-
COLORFUL ROCKS
Tourmaline, peacock rock, iron pyrite, and other minerals add even more.
-
INTERESTING ROCKS
Flat rocks like slate can be used to create height. Other rocks will also add interest, like fossilized wood that can be bought in thin pieces or round sections.
-
FOSSILS
Fossils, like the ubiquitous anemone and snail shell, can be purchased in many places. Fossilized fish and impressions of ancient plants could also find a home in the terrarium.
-
AMBER
Another type of fossil is amber. With its warm orange glow, this type of resin is supposed to have healing powers, and if you can get one with a fossilized bug in it, so much the better.
